A battery-operated rickshaw driver named Abu Taher (50) was killed in a collision with a truck early Friday morning in the Jokshin Bazar area on the Lakshmipur-Dhaka regional highway in Lakshmipur’s Sadar Upazila. Another passenger, Suman, was critically injured in the accident.
The incident was confirmed by Abdul Munnaf, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Sadar Model Police Station, at around 12:30 PM. Munnaf stated that no formal complaint has been filed yet, but further legal action will be taken if a complaint is submitted.
Abu Taher, the deceased, was a resident of Laharandi village in Laharandi Union and the son of Aziz Ullah. He made his living as a battery-powered rickshaw driver.
According to police and local witnesses, the accident occurred when Taher was driving his rickshaw toward Jokshin Bazar. As he neared the market, an oncoming truck struck his rickshaw. Both Taher and passenger Suman sustained severe injuries. They were immediately taken to Sadar Hospital, where the attending doctor declared Taher dead.
Dr. Arup Pal, Residential Medical Officer (RMO) at Sadar Hospital, reported that Suman’s condition is critical, and he has been transferred to Noakhali General Hospital for further treatment.
