According to data from the Bangladesh Financial Intelligence Unit (BFIU), a total of 300 bank accounts have been frozen since August 5. The financial intelligence agency of the central bank has been systematically freezing the accounts of individuals and institutions to combat money laundering activities in the country.

The BFIU has confirmed that efforts are ongoing to trace and identify funds that have been laundered abroad. Approximately 300 accounts have been frozen since the transition of the Awami regime, as reported by BFIU sources on Tuesday.

In addition, 100 legal cases have been initiated concerning these accounts, which collectively hold significant amounts of money. Should it be proven during legal proceedings that the funds were misappropriated, the seized assets will be deposited into the Bangladesh Bank treasury. Conversely, if the allegations are not substantiated, the accounts will be reinstated, according to BFIU officials.

“While this process is lengthy, if the location of the funds is determined, there is a possibility of recovering them,” stated AKM Ehsan, Deputy Head of the BFIU. The officials emphasized their ongoing commitment to investigating money laundering and financial irregularities associated with influential figures from the previous government.
