In response to student demands, the government appointed Professor Dr. Mohammad Zainal Abedin from the Mechanical Engineering Department as the Vice-Chancellor (VC) of Dhaka University of Engineering and Technology (DUET) in Gazipur. The announcement was made on Monday, October 21, through a notification issued by the Ministry of Education.
This appointment follows recent protests by students advocating for the swift appointment of a permanent VC. During the demonstrations, students specifically requested that the new VC be appointed from within the DUET faculty.
Dr. Abedin’s appointment comes with five specific conditions: his term as Vice-Chancellor will last four years from the date of joining; he will receive a salary and allowances equivalent to his current position; he will be entitled to other benefits associated with the Vice-Chancellor role as per regulations; he will be required to remain on campus at all times as the chief executive officer of the university; and the President and Chancellor reserve the right to revoke the appointment at any time if necessary.
Following the fall of the Awami League government on August 5, numerous vice-chancellors at various public universities resigned. Since then, the government has initiated the process of appointing new vice-chancellors across different universities, with today’s announcement marking the latest in these appointments.
