The main opposition party, BNP, has taken disciplinary action by expelling four more grassroots leaders for disregarding the party’s decision regarding participation in the first phase of upcoming upazila elections.
This decision was announced in a press release on Tuesday, in accordance with the party’s constitution.
The expelled leaders include Sabira Begum, Vice President of Dhaka’s Keraniganj Model Thana unit BNP; Haziurul Islam Azhar, Joint Secretary of Sunamganj’s Shalla upazila unit BNP; Abdul Majid, Convener of Swechchasebak Dal, and Saifur Rahman, a member of Jubo Dal.
They have been removed from all levels of party positions, including primary membership, for their involvement in the first phase of upazila polls against the party’s directive.
This decision follows the expulsion of 76 other party leaders on similar grounds on April 26 and 27. However, on April 28, the expulsion order against Romana Ahmed, Organising Secretary of the Meherpur district unit BNP, was rescinded after she abstained from participating in the first phase of upazila elections and apologized for defying the party’s decision.
The Election Commission has scheduled the first phase of upazila polls for May 8, with a total of 152 upazilas across the country set to vote. Subsequent phases will take place on May 23, May 29, and June 5, covering a total of 492 upazilas.
