Sarah Cooke, the British High Commissioner appointed to Bangladesh, organized an Iftar party in Sylhet in honor of distinguished people representing various professions.
The iftar party held at an elite hotel in the City on Monday (March 18) turned into a get-together.
Before the Iftar, the British High Commissioner welcomed the guests. He said Sylhet is a historical area. Sylhet’s relationship with UK is very close because 90 percent of Bangladeshis living in the UK are from Sylhet. Because of Sylhet, Bangladesh’s relationship with UK is getting better day by day. The contribution of Sylhet to UK is very unique. He emphasized on how the UK and Sylhet can strengthen closer ties.
The High Commissioner said that the United Kingdom has strong cultural, political and economic relations with Bangladesh. The UK has worked closely with the government and people of Bangladesh in many areas including trade, investment and development.
Bangladesh-Britain has already completed 51 years of diplomatic relations. At this time Brit Bangla ties started a new chapter. The continuity of this relationship will be stronger in the future.
Wishing everyone a happy Ramadan, the British High Commissioner said, the month of Ramadan returns every year with a message of moderation and peace. And this iftar mahfil gives an opportunity to sit together with everyone in Ramadan.
Former Mayor of Sylhet Ariful Haque Chowdhury, Divisional Commissioner Abu Ahmed Siddiqui, DIG Sylhet Range of Police Shah Mizan Shafiur Rahman, public representatives, politicians, journalists, lawyers and people from various walks of life participated in the iftar ceremony. High-ranking officials were present on behalf of the British High Commission at the Iftar party.
