Reaction over SL leader's death: AL activists torch JSD leaders’ houses in Kushtia

A Swechchhasebak League (SL) leader, who was seriously injured in an attack in Bheramara upazila of Kushtia on August 2, died on Wednesday while undergoing treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
The deceased was identified as Sanjay Kumar Pramanik, 37, convener of Bheramara municipality Swechchhasebak League.
Bheramara police station officer-in-charge Md Jahurul Islam said that Swechchhasebak League leader Sanjay’s younger brother Sampad confirmed the death news over phone in the morning.
In a reaction to the incident, the Awami League (AL) activists have torched and vandalized residences of Mustafizur Rahman Shovon, a leader of Juba Jote (youth wing of Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal) and his relatives for his involvement in the killing.
During the attack, the AL supporters also clashed with members of the law enforcement agencies leaving several insured on the AL side. Police also claimed that one police personnel was also hurt in the AL attack.
It was known that after hearing the Sanjay’s death, the activists of AL associated bodies- Jubo League, Swechchhasebak League, Chatra League- gathered at Dakbangla intersection at Bheramara at 10 o’clock.
Later, the armed activists conducted the attack on Mustafizur Rahman Shovon Kacharipara’s office and his house and severely vandalized those before setting on fire.
After that the AL activists carried out the attack on the Shovon uncle house and business and torched them.
Moreover, AL agitated supporters continued their destructive activities attacking Shovon brother in law Rabiul Islam’s house in Rathpara area of Bheramara.
Rabiul Islam brother Shahidul Islam said about 50-60 people with arms have attacked our residence and vandalized all the belongings and torched.
AL workers also attacked and torched Shovon uncle Salauddin and cousin Eyamin’s houses in Bamanpara area. Later the AL activists blocked the Kustia- Daulatpur regional highway from 10 am- 3 pm.
When the law enforces agencies tried to free the road, the AL activist attacked them leaving several injured on both the sides.
Injured AL supports were admitted to Bheramara Upazila Health Complex.
Kustia additional superintendent of police (crime, ops and media) Palsh Kanti said an untoward situation was create in Bheramara upazilla. Law enforces agencies have brought the situation under control.
Earlier, on August 2, Sanjay was returning home with some people after attending a party meeting when a group of people, led by Juba Jote (youth wing of Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal) district sports affairs secretary Mustafizur Rahman Shovon, opened indiscriminate fire on them, leaving Sanjay and two others critically injured.
Later, local people rescued the injured and took them to Bheramara Upazila Health Complex, where doctors referred them to Kushtia General Hospital. However, from there Sanjay was sent to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for better treatment.
On August 3, Sanjay’s wife Bithi Rani Dey filed a case with Bheramara Police Station accusing 14 people, including Juba Jote leader Mustafizur Rahman Shovon.
OC Md Jahurul Islam said that five people, including Shovon, were currently in jail in the case. The other accused were on bail.
