Fire rages on at dump yard near Matarbari Power Plant

A fire that broke out near the Matarbari Coal Power Plant area in Moheshkhali upazila of Cox’s Bazar could not be brought under control even after 10 hours.

Locals and firefighters have been trying to douse the blaze which broke out around 10:30am at a dump yard, where packing materials such as wooden boxes were discarded, said Abul Kalam Azad, its project director.

In addition to broken wood, tonnes of unused items, including iron scraps, and tin roofs, are stacked there.

Two fire engines from Moheshkhali and Pekua were trying to douse the fire.

Saifur Rahman, chief engineer of the project said the power plant is around 3km away from the area and is safe, the project director said.

The fire might have originated from the negligence of labourers, according to project sources.
