MM Jasim :
University Grants Commission (UGC) has made some recommendations to President Abdul Hamid to take measures to resolve crisis facing public universities.
The UGC did it in its annual reports recently.
UGC Chairman Professor AK Azad Chowdhury told The New Nation that they did it in order to ensure the quality education.
“We know that it is a very complicated task for us. We are thinking of how to tackle it. We are also
worrying over stalemate situation gripping the public universities,” Professor Azad said.
He said, we would continue to work for quality education. That is why we had recommended to the government to take measures in the interest of the higher education system. Perhaps the government has to take stern action to resolve the crisis and to flourish the education.
Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid told The New Nation that they would take any step to resolve stalemate prevailing at public universities. “We are looking into the matter,” the Minister said.
Professor Anwar Hossain of History Department of Dhaka University said, the government appoints Vice-Chancellor in some universities. But some of them have no quality to run the university. Some of them are totally disqualified. So, the government should appoint Vice-Chancellor scrutinising their academic qualification.
Professor Anwar suggested that the government should take immediate action to resolve the crisis.
He also requested the government not to appoint the VCs on political consideration.
It may be mentioned that the stalemate situation was prevailing in Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET), Jahangirnagar University, Islamic University, Rajshahi University, Chittagong University, Shahjalal University of Science and Technology, Comilla University and Begum Rokeya University at Rangpur. Academic activities have been hampered tremendously due to stalemate.
