30 out of 214 members of the central committee of National Citizens Party (NCP) have expressed objection to the possibility of the forming a political alliance or seat deal with an 8-party alliance including Jamaat-e-Islami.
They have submitted a memorandum to party convener Nahid Islam mentioning: “Regarding principled objections to the possible alliance in light of the party’s values and responsibility for the July Uprising’.
Mushfiqur Us Salehin, who signed the memorandum as member number 1, confirmed the matter to the media at around 8 pm on Saturday. He is the party’s media editor and joint member secretary.
In the memorandum, the leaders cited the NCP’s declared ideology, historical responsibility for the July Uprising, and democratic ethics as the basis for their objection.
It is mentioned that they clearly have objection to the recent discussions that have come to the fore regarding the possibility of a political alliance or seat agreement with an 8-party alliance including Jamaat-e-Islami.
It further states: We respectfully request that these policy questions be seriously considered in determining any alliance policy of the party and a clear position be taken not to enter into any political alliance with Jamaat-e-Islami. We believe that strategy should be determined on the basis of policy stance, and policy stance should not be sacrificed for strategic reasons.
