Suraim Yousuf :

Amidst several days of frustration and despair, let me share some good news with you. It’s always uplifting to hear and share positive updates about the country.
1. Over the past six months, the interim government has repaid Tk 62,000 crore in domestic and foreign loans.
2. The country’s remittance inflow has increased to $18.49 billion – $4 billion more than the same period last year.
3. Foreign reserves have risen to Tk 2,140 crore.
4. Tk 635 crore has been recovered from the accounts of Hasina and her family.
5. Subsidies on food products have increased by nearly 12 per cent.
6. The interim government has successfully managed to prevent a significant price surge during Ramadan.
7. February recorded the lowest inflation rate in the past 22 months.
8. A decision has been made to complete rape investigations within 15 days and trials within 90 days.
9. FIFA’s ban on the Bangladesh Football Federation (BFF), imposed due to economic scandals during the Awami League era, has now been lifted.
10. The UN Secretary-General is visiting Bangladesh for four days – a remarkable achievement, made possible by Yunus. António Guterres’ visit will strengthen the global recognition of this government.
It is easy to talk, criticise, and demand immediate elections. The BNP has always pushed for elections merely to maintain political pressure and activism. The BNP leadership knows very well that repairing the crippled economy left behind by Hasina will be an immense challenge. Moreover, if they fail to stabilise the economy, control prices, and curb inflation, their hold on power will be short-lived, said the analyst.
Dr Yunus is striving to rectify numerous issues – a fractured nation and a struggling economy – yet he continues his efforts undeterred. Let’s give the man some credit. A little encouragement for the interim government wouldn’t go amiss either.
