United Nations (UN) Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus are set to attend an Iftar gathering with approximately 100,000 Rohingya refugees in Cox’s Bazar this Friday.

The event, being organised on behalf of the Chief Adviser, will take place at the Rohingya refugee camps, as announced by Deputy Press Secretary Abul Kalam Azad Majumder during a press briefing at the Foreign Service Academy on Wednesday.

Antonio Guterres is expected to arrive in Dhaka today for a four-day official visit to Bangladesh.

Speaking at the same event, Chief Adviser’s Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam reaffirmed the interim government’s commitment to intensifying diplomatic efforts to facilitate the safe and dignified repatriation of forcibly displaced Rohingyas to Rakhine State, Myanmar.

He stressed that peace and stability in Rakhine were critical prerequisites for the voluntary return of Rohingyas. “We are actively engaging in diplomatic initiatives to ensure their safe and dignified repatriation,” he stated.

The press secretary further highlighted that the government remains focused on ensuring a harmonious coexistence between Rohingya refugees and local communities in Myanmar.

Responding to queries about Election Commission (EC) reforms, Shafiqul Alam explained that once the government reaches a broader consensus with political parties, the EC will implement the reform proposals agreed upon.

Additionally, he noted that the six reform commissions’ proposals had already been shared with all political parties, who are currently reviewing the recommendations.
