Interim government chief adviser, Professor Muhammad Yunus, congratulated US President-elect Donald Trump on Wednesday, expressing hope for further strengthening the Dhaka-Washington partnership and fostering sustainable development.

“I firmly believe the possibilities are endless as our two friendly nations explore new avenues of collaboration,” said the Nobel Peace Laureate in his message, conveying heartfelt congratulations to Trump on behalf of the government and people of Bangladesh following his victory in the US Presidential Election 2024.

Professor Yunus noted that Trump’s re-election reflects the resonance of his leadership and vision with the American people. “I am confident that under your stewardship, the United States will continue to thrive and inspire others around the world,” he added.

He highlighted the long-standing friendship between Bangladesh and the United States, which has deepened during Trump’s previous term in office. “Aligning with our commitment to a peaceful and inclusive society, the government and peace-loving people of Bangladesh look forward to partnering with you in addressing global challenges and working towards peace, harmony, stability, and prosperity for all,” Professor Yunus said.

The chief adviser conveyed his best wishes for Trump’s success as he embarks on this momentous journey of leading his country. “We welcome him (Trump) and hope that Bangladesh-US relations will reach new heights,” Chief Adviser’s Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam told reporters at a media briefing at the Foreign Service Academy on Wednesday evening.

Responding to a question about Trump’s recent remarks on Bangladesh, Alam stated that they believed Trump had been misinformed and expressed hope that he would gain a clearer understanding of the situation. He added that the US was committed to supporting global democracy, and relations between the two countries would continue to strengthen.

Donald Trump’s election as the 47th president of the United States marks an extraordinary comeback for a former president who had refused to accept defeat four years ago.

On November 1, Alam mentioned that while Trump’s opinions on Bangladesh mattered, the government’s role was to provide the truth. He also emphasised that the US election results would not pose a challenge to Bangladesh-US relations.

Professor Yunus, known for his global leadership, maintains strong ties with senior leaders from both the Democratic and Republican parties. Alam noted that these relationships were based on personal connections and that regardless of whether Kamala Harris or Donald Trump won, Bangladesh’s relations with the US would remain strong.

Addressing Trump’s recent comments about minorities in Bangladesh, Alam stated that this was a domestic political issue, influenced by lobbyists, and was not expected to affect bilateral relations. On Thursday, Trump condemned the “barbaric violence” against Hindus, Christians, and other minorities in Bangladesh, claiming they were being attacked and looted by mobs in a nation mired in chaos.
