Jarraf Ahmed Pritam (31), who was set to join his wife in Australia for higher studies, was tragically stabbed to death by robbers in the capital on Tuesday night.

Pritam, who had married just four months ago, had resigned from his job in Dhaka in preparation for his move to Australia. However, his journey was cruelly cut short when he was attacked while returning to Mirpur-1 from his native village.

Pritam’s village home is Najipur in Naogaon, and his father, Badruzzaman, recently underwent open-heart surgery. To spare his family additional grief, they have not yet been informed of Pritam’s death.

On Tuesday night, Pritam left his village for Dhaka. According to his brother-in-law, Mir Piyas, he arrived in Dhaka early Wednesday morning, getting off the bus at Gabtali. On his way to Mirpur, around 5 a.m., he was accosted by robbers in the Mirpur-1 area.

The attackers stole his laptop and other belongings. When Pritam resisted, they brutally stabbed him, leaving him to die on the spot.

“Pritam was supposed to go to Australia in a few days, which is why he quit his job. But instead of a new beginning, he returned to Dhaka only to meet a tragic end,” said a grief-stricken Piyas. The devastating news has been kept from Pritam’s father and wife, who is already in Australia.

The family searched for Pritam throughout the day on Tuesday, only to learn on Wednesday that his body was in the mortuary at Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital. His body will be returned to his village for burial.

In response to the incident, Pritam’s cousin, Kaniz Sharmin, has filed a complaint with the Darus Salam police station, seeking justice for this senseless crime.
