Youth killed in BGB firing on Sylhet border

A youth named Almas Mia was killed in a firing by the BGB while trying to stop smuggled goods on the Jaintapur border in Sylhet. The BGB claims that the deceased was involved in smugglers. But the family alleges that innocent farmer Almas was shot dead. The incident took place in the Suraighat border area of ​​Charikatha union in Jaintapur upazila of Sylhet. On Wednesday (October 22) at around 11 am, a clash broke out between the BGB and smugglers while trying to stop a pickup carrying smuggled goods. The BGB claims that when they were fired upon, they returned fire in self-defense. One person was killed on the spot.
The deceased Almas Mia (35) was a resident of Nayakhel village and was a farmer by profession. According to the family and locals, Almas was not involved in any smuggling. He was shot while returning home after finishing his field work. Meanwhile, the local people became agitated over the death of the deceased. They seized a pickup truck loaded with stolen goods in the Chatul area.
Jaintapur Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Abul Basar Mohammad Badruzzaman said, “The body of the deceased was found at the Jaintapur Upazila Health Complex. An autopsy report is being prepared in the presence of the Executive Magistrate. The body has been sent to the Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital morgue for autopsy. No complaint has been received from the family. Legal action will be taken if a complaint is received.”
Lt. Col. Md. Zubair Anwar PSC, Commander of 19 BGB of Zakiganj Battalion, said, “The matter is under investigation. Detailed information will be announced through a press release after the investigation is completed.
