S A Shofiee, Sylhet:

Young scholar Qari Md Lutfur Rahman has received a huge response by cultivating ginger in sacks in Balaganj, Sylhet. His ginger cultivation using a special method using fallow land is the largest project in Sylhet. It has already created new interest in the entire area.

It is learned that Lutfur Rahman has started cultivating ginger in a special method with the encouragement and inspiration of another young scholar and social activist Maulana Tajul Islam, who lives in the UK, to utilise his vast land lying fallow. The Balaganj Upazila Agriculture Department is providing round-the-clock support to his project.

It can be seen on the ground that ginger has been cultivated in sacks in Molla Agrofarm in Islampur Mollabari, Boaljur Union, Balaganj Upazila through the Sack Ginger Cultivation Project 2025 in an area of approximately one acre in a special method. Ginger cultivation in sacks will protect ginger seedlings from flood water and various diseases.

Lutfur Rahman, the project’s initiator, said his ginger cultivation project in six thousand sacks using a special method is the largest project in Sylhet. So far, no one has cultivated ginger in six thousand sacks using a special method anywhere in Sylhet.

50 to 70 grams of ginger seeds have been planted in each sack on a vast land. If the yield is good, it is said one to one and a half kilograms of ginger will be produced in each sack within 8 to 10 months. There is a possibility of selling the ginger produced by the entire farm for about Tk 6-7 lakh. The initial cost of cultivating six thousand sacks of ginger was about Tk 2 lakh.

The Balaganj Upazila Agriculture Department provided assistance worth about Tk 60,000 through the Sylhet Region Agricultural Development Project in FY 2024-25 and the Flood Reconstruction Emergency Assistance Project (FREP) for this project of Lutfur Rahman.

Balaganj Upazila Agriculture Department said in addition to this project by Qari Md Lutfur Rahman, they have also done a demonstration project of 1,000 sacks in six unions of Balaganj Upazila.

Qari Md Lutfur Rahman said if the yield is good this time, the scope of the next project will be further expanded.

In this regard, Md Nuruzzaman, agricultural extension officer of the Balaganj Upazila Agriculture Department, said, “If we see the success of the ginger cultivation project in sacks in different unions of Balaganj, we will work on this project on a larger scale.”
