World Rivers Day observed in Chatmohar

With the slogan “Our River, Our Existence”, World Rivers Day was celebrated in Chatmohar, Pabna, along with the rest of the country.

On this occasion, a human chain and a road meeting were held on the Bhabanipur Bridge over the Ratnai river in the upazila at 10 am on Sunday.

The event was jointly organised by Dharitri Raksha Amara-Dhara, Water Keeper Bangladesh, and Amara-Raksha Ratnai River, and was presided over by Alhaj Abdul Jabbar Master, convener of Amara-Dhara to Save the Ratnai River.

Md. Jahangir Alam, coordinator of Amara-Dhara to Save the Chalanbil and central member of Amara-Dhara to Save the Earth, also participated in the programme.

The discussion was attended by Helalur Rahman Jewel, convener of Chalanbil Raksha Amara and president of the Chatmohar Press Club,journalist and assistant professor Iqbal Kabir Ranju, Mulgram UP member Md. Abdul Hamid Hamju; DBgram UP member Md. Abdul Matin Biswas, Khalilur Rahman and other local leaders.

During the event, the speakers demanded the removal of the Demra sluice gate in Faridpur and called for the Chiknai and Ratnai rivers to be kept functional.

They also urged the government to prevent encroachment on the rivers and to ensure they remain free from pollution.
