In Rupganj, Narayanganj, workers of a steel mill named ASB RM blocked the Dhaka–Sylhet highway on Tuesday morning, demanding payment of their four months of overdue wages. The workers burned tires and toppled electric poles during the protest in front of the factory, located in Barpa area of Ward No. 6 under Tarabo Municipality. The demonstration continued for about an hour, causing a severe traffic jam on both sides of the highway. According to protesting workers and local sources, the factory management had repeatedly promised to pay their salaries but kept delaying the payments with various excuses. When the wages were not paid on Tuesday as scheduled, the workers became furious and took to
the highway in protest. Later, factory owner Abul Kalam assured the workers that all
outstanding wages would be paid soon, after which the workers lifted the blockade. Abul Kalam said, “We have spoken with the workers and assured them that their dues will be cleared. The workers have since resumed their duties.” Rupganj Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Tariqul Islam confirmed that the situation is now under control and normal.
