Women need access to energy sector

City Desk :
Women’s participation in renewable energy sector in the country should be increased to ensure gender equality, said rights defenders.

They made the comment at an open dialogue on ‘Importance of Renewable Energy in Women’s Empowerment’ organised by Manusher Jonno Foundation on Thursday in the city, said a press release.

Executive director of the foundation Shaheen Anam said that policy changes were needed to ensure women’s participation in the renewable energy sector.

‘We need to increase the use of renewable energy by avoiding fossil fuels, which are harmful to the environment and also hazardous for women’s health,’ he said.

The policy should be reviewed through gender lens and changed to ensure women’s participation in the sector, she added.

MJF director (programme) Banasree Mitra Neogi presented the key note on ‘Invest in Women and Girls: Accelerate Progress through Renewable Energy.’

She said that providing equal education, training, and employment opportunities for women in this industry could help leverage diverse perspectives and skills to tackle the challenges of transitioning to clean energy.

This would not only ensure gender equality but also make it easier to achieve sustainable development goals, she added.
