Woman ‘gang-raped’ while seeking flood aid in Cumilla

Police have arrested six individuals in connection with the alleged gang rape of a flood-affected, handicapped woman in Titas upazila of Cumilla district.

The horrifying incident reportedly took place on Wednesday evening at Daskandi Bazaar, where the accused lured the 35-year-old victim with the false promise of providing relief aid.

The arrested suspects have been identified as Ali Noor, 45, from Porakandi village; CNG Babu, 40, from Chak Bari; CNG driver Idon, 25, from Chak Bari, Haripur; Arif, 30, from Haripur; Noor Mohammad, 25, from Das Kandi Chak Bari; and Bidyut Mazumder, 35, from the same village.

According to local sources, the accused were apprehended by local youths, including student volunteers, who tied them to a tree before handing them over to the police. The suspects were subjected to mob justice prior to the arrival of the authorities.

The tragic event unfolded when the victim went to Daskandi Bazaar on Wednesday afternoon in hopes of receiving relief materials. One of the accused, known as CNG Babu, allegedly deceived her into waiting at a shop under the guise of distributing aid. Later, the group of men reportedly took turns raping the woman.

The crime came to light when a student coordinator was informed of the incident. The suspects were then called to the bazaar on Friday morning, where they reportedly confessed to their crime.

Kazi Nazmul Haque, the officer-in-charge of Titas Police Station, confirmed the incident to the media, adding that the victim had been rescued and sent for a medical examination. A case is currently being processed, and further legal action will be taken against the accused.
