Parveen, a woman injured in a gas fire in Gazipur’s Bason Thana, has died from her burn injuries, a day after her son Ayan also succumbed to his wounds. The death toll from the incident now stands at four.
She passed away around 4:30am on Sunday at the Sheikh Hasina National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery in Dhaka, said Shawon Bin Rahman, resident surgeon at the emergency department. Parveen had suffered burns to 32 percent of her body.
The fire broke out on April 27 during cooking in a home in the Mogorkhal area. A total of five people were rushed to the burn institute around 10:30pm that night.
Seema, one of the victims, died the next day. Another woman, Taslima, died on April 29. Parveen’s son Ayan passed away on Saturday morning.
Parveen’s husband, Mazharul Islam, said the family had been renting the house in the area. He was away when the fire started and rushed home upon hearing the news.
“From what I’ve been told, gas had leaked from the cylinder and accumulated inside the house. When the stove was turned on, there was a loud explosion and a fire erupted,” he said. “Others in the house managed to put out the flames with water.”
In response to a question, Mazharul confirmed that Parveen was his wife and Ayan his son, while the other victims were tenants in the same building.
