Asif Mahmud Shojib Bhuyain, adviser to the Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Ministry, has announced that he will not serve in the election-time government.
Speaking on a talk show hosted by Khaled Muhiuddin on Thikana TV, aired on 12 August, Asif said: “Someone active in politics should not be part of an election-time government. Therefore, I will step down before the election schedule is announced.”

A prominent student leader during the 2024 anti-discrimination movement and subsequent mass uprising that ousted the Awami League government, Asif did not clarify whether he intends to contest the upcoming national elections or join the National Citizen Party (NCP). Currently also overseeing the Ministry of Youth and Sports, Asif reflected on the interim government’s first year, the political role of the military, divisions among July Uprising allies, and his own political trajectory.

He stressed that his role in the administration was to serve the mandates of the July Uprising, not to remain in power. Asif also underlined that key commitments – including implementation of the July Declaration and reforms to local government – remain unfinished, describing their fulfilment as a “historical liability.”
