Abdul Muqit Chowdhury :
The Holy month of Ramzan, the ninth month of lunar Arabic calendar, has arrived in our midst. The sighting of the crescent moon has brought with it the fragrance of the golden period of Rahmat (blessings), Maghfirat (forgiveness) and Nazat (salvation). A solemn occasion of complete surrender to the Will of
Allah Rabbul Alameen, the beginning of the days of self-restraint of the Muslims, creates an environment of hearty welcome from the capital city to the remotest corner of the country.
The Muslim Ummah all over the world welcomes the month of Ramzan in joy and commitment to the Commandments of Allah.
Taqwa (Allah fearing) is the inherent spirit behind all forms of worship. The spiritual condition of Allah-fearing is there in Salat, Fasting, Hajj, Qurbani, Jakat or in any Code of Islam . The Holy Quran says, “Worship your Rob (Creator and Sustainer), Who created you and those before you, so that you may guard against evil.” (Sura Baqara 2:21). This virtue of guarding oneself against evil is emphasised as the spirit of fasting. This is Taqwa and it leads to steadfastness, patience, making peace in the society and in the broader perspective, in the mankind. Allah, the Creator of the universe loves His created beings and wants to see that brotherhood and peace prevails among the children of Adam (As). The Holy Ramzan, the month of the continuous training of the Muslims for welfare in this world and Salvation in the Hereafter, has arrived among us with that message of Taqwa. We should avail this opportune moment.
The golden days of Ramzan opens an era of practice of most disciplined life for the pious people through fasting and related rituals. Special offer of the unlimited mercy of Allah is the gift for ‘Muttaqis’ who pass their days and nights in complete allegiance to the Divine Commandments and abstain from all forbidden deeds to become vicegerent of Allah.
All the former Divine scriptures were revealed in this Holy month. The Sahifa of Hazrat Ibrahim (As), the Zabur of Dawood (As), the Towrat of Hazrat Musa (As) and the Inzil of Hazrat Isa (As) were revealed in this month. At last the Holy Quran, guide for mankind, the universal and Eternal message of Allah, was also revealed in this month. So, it is the most dignified period of the year for its Divine relation with the created human beings.
Fasting was a compulsory practice of the former Ummats. And at last, the month-long fasting was ordained for Ummat-e-Muhammadi.
The Holy Quran reveals : “O ye who believe! Fasting is prescribed to you as it was prescribed to those before you, that ye may (learn) self-restraint.” (Sura Baqara 2 : 183)
“Ramzan is the (month) in which was sent down the Quran, as a guide to mankind, also clear (signs) for guidance and judgement (between right and wrong) ……” (Sura Baqara 2 : 185)
Islam aims to create the most ideal society of human brotherhood, above all narrow enmity and conflict. Let us accept fasting of Ramzan on the basis of Taqwa to uplift ourselves to that height.
