While addressing another session, Bangladesh Bank Governor Ahsan H Mansur stated on Tuesday that despite the government’s ongoing efforts, it may not be possible to rescue some of the weaker banks.
“We are striving to sustain the banks through good governance, but we may not be able to save them all. Not all banks will survive. Some have very slim chances, as 87 percent of their deposits have been concentrated within a single family,” the governor remarked.
He further stated, “At this moment, we are not considering the approval of new digital banks. Instead, our focus is on ensuring interoperability for mobile financial services (MFS).”
Additionally, the governor emphasised that new regulations are being developed to prevent the Financial Institution Department (FID) from exerting undue influence over the banking sector.
“The FID will not have any authority over the banking sector. If they wish, they can oversee insurance companies, but not banks,” he asserted.
