Watermelon sales have skyrocketed across Bangladesh as the demand for the refreshing summer fruit peaks with the onset of rising temperatures.
Markets, roadside stalls, and supermarkets are witnessing a surge in customers eager to buy the seasonal favorite, driving up sales and benefiting farmers and traders alike.
Fruit vendors in Dhaka, Chattogram, Rajshahi, and other major cities report that watermelon sales have doubled compared to the previous month.
The scorching heat has led to increased consumer interest in hydrating fruits, and watermelon, known for its high water content and cooling properties, has emerged as the top choice.
Farmers in southern districts such as Barishal, Patuakhali, and Khulna—key watermelon-producing regions—are experiencing high yields this season. Many growers are optimistic about record sales as demand surges both in urban and rural markets.
“We are getting bulk orders from wholesalers and retailers. Prices have remained stable, allowing both farmers and customers to benefit,” said Rafiqul Islam, a farmer from Patuakhali.
Despite the high demand, prices have remained relatively steady. In Dhaka, watermelon prices range from Tk 50 to Tk 80 per kilogram, depending on size and quality.
Vendors note that the affordability of the fruit has contributed to its widespread popularity among consumers from all income groups. However, challenges remain for traders and farmers. Logistics, transportation costs, and post-harvest losses continue to be concerns for those in the supply chain.
