Water entering haor region

The water coming from India’s Tripura through the Khawai river of Habiganj is entering the haor region. Haor water has been increasing for two days. Raised submerged roads and cropland are being flooded anew. As a result, the people of haor Par are spending their days in worry. Meanwhile, the residents of Ashtagram, Itna and Mithamin upazilas are afraid of waterlogging.
According to local sources, the source of the main river Khowai in Habiganj is in Tripura state of India. Due to heavy rainfall in India for the past few days, the water in the river has increased. Water is flowing over 195 CM of the boundary line at Machulia point of Habiganj of Khoai river and 231.7 CM at Balla point of India-Bangladesh border.
In this, the water is rising rapidly in Ashtagram, Itna and Mithamin haor upazilas of Kishoreganj in the northeastern part of the country. However, the Water Development Board (WDB) saids, there is no danger of flooding in Kishoreganj Haor area, where water flows below the flood limit. Nahid Zaman, a resident of East Ashtagram of Ashtagram Upazila, said, ‘The water has been rising in Dhira area for two or three days. We are spreading jaina jala (seeds) to plant Ruaichcha (Ropa Aman). Now the water rises, we are in danger.’
Abdul Jabbar of Mithamain Upazila’s Kewarjord Union said, ‘We are not yet affected by the rising water. But if it increases too much, we will lose.’
Executive Engineer of Water Development Board (WDB) in Habiganj, Shamim Hasnain said that, various areas of Habiganj have been flooded by upstream water coming from India. However, the flood situation will improve in a day or two.
