Nobel Laureate Professor Dr Muhammad Yunus has called for an end to violence and cautioned against letting recent achievements be undermined by errors.

In a statement released by the Yunus Centre on Wednesday, Dr Yunus, who is set to lead an interim government following the recent upheaval, congratulated the students for their bravery and urged everyone to work towards nation-building.

“I congratulate the brave students who played a pivotal role in securing our Second Victory Day and commend the people for their unwavering support,”

Dr Yunus said. “Let us make the most of this new victory and ensure it is not lost due to our own mistakes.”
Dr Yunus appealed to the public to remain calm and avoid all forms of violence.

“I earnestly urge everyone including students, political party members, and non-political citizens to stay composed. Violence is our adversary, and it is imperative that we do not create additional conflict. Let us focus on building our country instead,” he emphasised.

Reflecting on Bangladesh’s potential, Dr Yunus noted, “Our country is beautiful and full of exciting opportunities. It is our duty to protect it and make it a splendid place for ourselves and future generations.”

Highlighting the role of youth, Dr Yunus stated, “Our youth is ready to take the lead in shaping a new world. Let us not squander this chance by engaging in senseless violence.”

In an interview with the Financial Times, Dr Yunus reiterated the need for restoring trust in the government. “It is essential that we swiftly restore confidence in the government,” said Dr Yunus, who is 84. “We need calm, a clear roadmap for new elections, and to prepare for new leadership to unlock Bangladesh’s extraordinary potential.”

Dr Yunus also honoured the sacrifices made by students for the nation’s liberation, stating, “Given the sacrifices, particularly those who lost their lives, I cannot refuse to support their cause. In the days ahead, I will engage with all relevant parties to collaborate on rebuilding Bangladesh and to discuss how they can contribute.”

Dr Yunus has stated he does not intend to seek any elected or appointed office beyond his role during this interim period.

He is expected to return to Bangladesh on Thursday afternoon. Professor Yunus will arrive at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka on an Emirates flight from Dubai, scheduled to land at 2:10 pm, subject to any delays.

In related news, President Mohammed Shahabuddin has decided to form an interim government led by Dr Yunus on Thursday evening.

This decision followed a meeting at Bangabhaban with the heads of the Army, Navy, Air Force, and representatives from the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement.
