Distribution of VGF (Rice) s started under humanitarian aid infrastructure to support the livelihood of fishermen who refrain from hilsa fishing during the breeding season. Rice was distributed among the fishermen in Shibalaya and Teota Union on Tuesday.
It has been reported that special surveillance measures have been taken in Padma Jamuna for 22 days till November 3 to protect mother Hilsa during the breeding season. Fisheries department, coast guard and local patrol have been arranged at the river banks of Daulatpur, Shivalay and Harirampurupazilas of Manikganj surrounded by Padma-Yamuna. 25kg of rice per person is being distributed as food aid under the VGF scheme to the registered fishermen under government initiative to prevent them from fishing during the prohibited time.
Shibalaya Senior Upazila Fisheries Officer (Additional Duty) Md. ZahirulIsramAkand said that 900 people in Teota, 590 in Arua, 524 in Shibalaya, 524 Uthali in Shibalaya and 50 in Ulail union abstained from fishing on November 3 to protect the hilsa during the breeding season and for livelihood. 25 kg of rice will be distributed to 2,114 selected fishermen families.
