Staff Reporter :

BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has accused a vested group of deliberately misrepresenting the party’s stance on reforms.

He reaffirmed that BNP fully endorses the essential reforms needed to ensure holding a free and fair election.

Speaking to reporters at his residence in Thakurgaon district town on Wednesday, Fakhrul clarified the party’s position.

“Our stance on reforms is being distorted. Certain groups are spreading false claims that BNP prioritizes elections first and reforms later. This is completely untrue. We have always been advocates of reforms,” he said.

“We have consistently maintained that the minimum necessary reforms must be in place to guarantee a fair and transparent election. At no point have we suggested holding elections before implementing reforms. This is a deliberate misrepresentation aimed at misleading the public,” Fakhurl said.

Mirza Fakhrul reiterated BNP’s firm commitment to electoral, law enforcement, and judicial reforms to establish a fair election process.

Acknowledging the scholars and experts involved in the reform process, he said, “We respect and appreciate their contributions. However, if their actions go against public interest, we cannot support them.”

“Democracy remains the best system of governance. If any political party adopts an authoritarian approach after assuming power, the people will oust them, just as they will with the Awami League government,” he warned.

“Every political party has its own perspective, but ultimately, the people will decide what is best for them. Parties will present their policies, and those who gain the people’s trust will govern-that is the essence of democracy,” he said.
