Verdict date due Hasina’s war crimes case

Staff Reporter:

Prosecutor MH Tamim has confirmed that the International Crimes Tribunal will announce the date for delivering the verdict in the case against former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on 13 November, dismissing any doubts or political speculation surrounding the schedule.

Speaking at a press briefing at the tribunal premises on Sunday afternoon, Tamim said, “Whatever happens in politics, there is no uncertainty regarding the tribunal’s proceedings. The date to fix the verdict announcement in Sheikh Hasina’s case will be decided on 13 November as planned.”

He clarified, however, that the verdict itself will not be delivered that day—rather, the specific date for the judgment will be formally set.

The tribunal has scheduled 13 November to determine the verdict date in the case against Sheikh Hasina and several co-accused, who stand charged with crimes against humanity committed during the July–August 2024 uprising. Meanwhile, in a separate case concerning the killing of six people at Chandkharpul in Dhaka during the July–August movement, the tribunal on Sunday completed the 14th day of witness examination against former DMP Commissioner Habibur Rahman and seven others.

The next hearing has been set for 12 November.

The proceedings took place before the three-member judicial panel of Tribunal-1, headed by Justice Golam Murtuza Majumder.

On Sunday, Special Investigation Officer Tanvir Hasan Zoha and two others testified before the court.

Earlier, on 2 November, during the 13th hearing, two CID forensic experts—Inspector Rokonuzaaman and Sub-Inspector Shahed Zobayer Lawrence—testified, describing their analysis of evidence recovered from the crime scene.

They were later cross-examined by state-appointed lawyers representing the absconding accused and defense counsel for those in custody.

So far, 22 witnesses have testified in the Chandkharpul murder case. Of the eight accused, four detained individuals were produced before the tribunal during Sunday’s proceedings.
