Khulna Correspondent :

The prices of all types of vegetables have increased in Khulna market. This is causing extreme discomfort to the common people. Due to the soaring prices of vegetables, buyers are having extreme difficulty buying vegetables in the raw market. Ashar month is going on, the prices of vegetables are 10-20 taka higher than last week, said buyers and sellers.

However, the prices of vegetables that are not in season now are quite high. Most of the vegetables in the market are now priced above 40 taka.

It was learned from visiting the Moylapota Sandhya Bazar, Rupsha KCC Market and Gallamari markets in Khulna and talking to traders.

Among the vegetables that have increased in price this week compared to last week are- 40 taka per kg of puishak, which was 30 taka last week. 50 taka per kg of red sak, which was 40 taka last week. 40-45 taka per kg of patal, which was 30 taka last week. Cucumber is 70-80 taka, which was 60-70 taka last week and chichinga is 50-60 taka, which was 40-45 taka last week.

Vegetables that are slightly lower in price this week compared to last week include- Barbati is is 80 taka per kg, which was 80-90 taka last week. Oel and Uchhe( Bitter gourd) are 80 taka, which was 100 taka last week. Tomato is 140-160 taka, which was 160-180 taka last week. Green chilli is 120 taka, which was 180 taka last week and garlic is 200 taka, desi 120 and 160 taka, which is 20-30 taka less than last week.

Faruk Hossain, a vegetable seller at Moylapota Bazaar, said that the crops have been damaged due to rain for the past few days, so there are fewer vegetables coming to the market. The prices are a little higher due to the fewer arrivals.

Like last week, the prices of eggs and chicken meat are unchanged this week as well. White eggs from Hali Farm are priced at 44-48 taka, red eggs at 48 taka, duck eggs at 72 taka and chicken eggs at 64 taka. Broiler chickens are priced at 140-150 taka per kg, golden chickens at 280-290 taka.

Ashraful Islam, a student of Government Brajlal College, a buyer at Gallamari Market, said, “Now is the season for vegetables in full swing. The price seems high compared to that.”
