Utmost measures will be taken to secure tunnel: PM’s Principal Secretary

Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Tunnel ( Bangabandhu Tunnel) built under the Karnaphuli River is awaiting inauguration.

If everything goes well, it is going to be inaugurated on October 28.

Final preparations are currently underway for the inauguration.

The Principal Secretary to the Prime Minister, Tofazzal Hossain Mia visited the tunnel area on September 20 evening.

At this time he answered various questions by journalists.

In response to a question regarding the security of the tunnel, the Principal Secretary said, “We are giving utmost importance to the issue of security.

Two police camps have already been established.

Along with the police, the Coast Guard, Tourist Police will also be responsible for the security of the tunnel.

CDA has taken up a scheme for traffic management.

It will start working soon.

We will do whatever it takes to ensure safety.”

He also said, “This tunnel will not only connect both sides, but also one city two town has been implemented.

Another thing, we have plans to connect it with the Asian Highway.”

He added that the Prime Minister will address a public meeting at the south end of the Karnaphuli River after the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Tunnel inauguration on October 28.

DIG Chattogram Range Noore Alam Mina, CMP Commissioner Krishna Pad Roy, Superintendent of Police SM Shafiullah, Deputy Commissioner Abul Basar Mohammad Fakhruzzaman, Tunnel Project Director Harunur Rashid and other officials of various organisations were present.

The work of Bangabandhu Tunnel project started in December 2017 at a cost of about 10 thousand 374 crores.

Worked on the project in the Chinese company named ‘China Communication Construction Limited’.

The project is being implemented with the joint funding of the Government of Bangladesh and China.

Out of the project cost of Tk10,374 crores, Exim Bank of China has given a loan of Tk5,913 crores.

The rest was financed by the Bangladesh government, sources said.
