US State Department spokesperson Tammy Bruce has addressed concerns regarding Bangladesh’s national security and press freedom, following reports of Islamist extremist threats in some Indian media and the alleged unlawful imprisonment of journalists.

Speaking at a press briefing in Washington, DC, on Monday, Bruce reaffirmed the United States’ commitment to counterterrorism efforts and emphasised the importance of diplomatic engagement with Bangladesh.

“Our approach to international relations is based on clear expectations for our allies. If we consider a country a friend, we expect them to uphold shared values,” she stated.

Bruce reiterated that the US administration, under President Donald Trump and Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, remains committed to diplomatic resolutions through direct engagement with international partners. She further stressed that the US expects all nations, including Bangladesh, to uphold human rights and ensure fair treatment of their citizens.

Addressing concerns over press freedom, Bruce acknowledged reports of the imprisonment of journalists in Bangladesh under the interim government led by Dr Muhammad Yunus.

She reaffirmed the United States’ commitment to human rights and media freedom worldwide.
“We expect every country, including Bangladesh, to adhere to human rights principles and ensure fair treatment of their citizens, in line with democratic values,” she said.

The US has consistently advocated for the protection of press freedom and human rights across the globe, urging governments to respect these fundamental principles.
