The US State Department has stated that the Biden Administration wants to see human rights upheld for the people of Bangladesh under the Interim Government led by Prof Muhammad Yunus.

Matthew Miller, spokesperson for the State Department, made this remark during a regular press briefing in Washington on Thursday, responding to a journalist’s question.

In the briefing, a journalist asked Miller how the United States views the growing incidents of attacks on lawyers across Bangladesh, including an attack on the lawyer of senior leader Amir Hossain Amu, within court premises.

The journalist also inquired about the broader implications of these incidents for human rights, legal protection, and the rule of law in Bangladesh.

In response, Miller said, “So our position with respect to human rights in Bangladesh is the same under this government as it was under the previous government, is that we want to see the human rights of the Bangladeshi people upheld.”

In another question, a journalist asked Miller if he had any information or assessment regarding a claim by Interim Government Adviser Asif Mahmud about preparations for an armed struggle.

The journalist also asked if there were concerns about the potential source of arms or the impact of such remarks on regional stability.

Miller replied, “I haven’t seen that statement at all. I wouldn’t want to comment on it.”
Another journalist asked about reports suggesting that Bangladesh’s interim government is considering removing secularism from the constitution, which could significantly affect the country’s democratic framework and minority rights.

To this, Miller responded, “I just don’t have a comment on that.”
