THE ongoing protests at the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant (RNPP) raise significant concerns not only about the welfare of its workforce but also about the broader implications for national security and nuclear safety in Bangladesh.

As the country’s first nuclear facility, RNPP is classified as a Key Point Installation (KPI) of the highest sensitivity, and the unrest surrounding it is alarming.

Since the demonstrations began on 28 April, led by employees of Nuclear Power Plant Company Bangladesh Limited (NPCBL), the issues at hand have become increasingly clear.

Our newspaper yesterday reported that workers are voicing legitimate grievances regarding poor working conditions, unclear roles, and inadequate facilities, particularly for female staff.

Their demands for fair treatment and improved working conditions should not be dismissed as mere discontent; they reflect a deeper malaise that could jeopardise the very operations of this critical infrastructure.

The protests have drawn the attention of experts, including Professor Dr. Md. Shafiqul Islam of Dhaka University, who rightly cautions against such activities in a sensitive nuclear environment. The potential for unrest to compromise safety protocols cannot be overstated.

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has expressed surprise at the situation, highlighting the need for immediate action to restore order and confidence in the facility’s management.

Managing Director Dr. Md. Zahidul Hasan’s dismissal of the protests as a ‘personal outburst’ is troubling. It suggests a lack of understanding of the gravity of the situation.

While he cites the novelty of the nuclear sector in Bangladesh as a challenge, he and other officials must recognise that unresolved worker grievances can lead to operational disruptions that threaten national security.

The government must intervene decisively to address these concerns. Open dialogue between management and employees is essential to foster a culture of safety and respect.

The integrity of the RNPP and the safety of its operations depend on a workforce that feels valued and heard.

As tensions escalate, the authorities must act swiftly to resolve these issues without compromising the safety and security protocols that are paramount in a nuclear facility.

The future of Bangladesh’s nuclear ambitions hangs in the balance, and it is the responsibility of all stakeholders to ensure that the Rooppur project should not be derailed by internal strife.
