Business Desk:

Shipping and Textiles Adviser Brig Gen (Retd) Dr M Sakhawat Hussain on Saturday said the interim government was planning to hand over several land ports to the private sector and shut down those that generate no revenue.

“Four among the total 24 land ports of the country have already been closed. The process of shutting down four more unprofitable land ports is underway,” the adviser said while speaking to the reporters during a visit to the Hili land port in Dinajpur.

He said plans were being formulated to improve the infrastructure of developing land ports, and steps will be taken gradually to address the problems.

Earlier, the business leaders of the port in a meeting with the adviser urged authorities to repair roads, increase warehouse facilities, and develop overall infrastructure.

Following the meeting, the adviser inspected various facilities of the Hili land port and customs division and gave necessary instructions to the concerned officials.

Bangladesh Land Port Authority Chairman Mohammad Manjarul Mannan, Rangpur Customs Divisional Commissioner Arun Kumar Biswas, and Hili Customs Assistant Commissioner ASM Akram were present during the visit, among others.
