United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) has assured continued support to the resolution of the Rohingya crisis including the host country.
The outgoing UNHCR representative in Bangladesh Sumbul Rizvi came up with the assurances when she paid a courtesy call on the Foreign Secretary Md Jasim Uddin at the foreign ministry on Thursday, Foreign Ministry said.
During the meeting, foreign secretary congratulated the UNHCR representative on her successful tenure in Bangladesh and appreciated her efforts to deliver humanitarian assistance to Rohingya population sheltered in Bangladesh.
During the meeting, foreign secretary recalled the recent visits of the UN secretary general Antonio Guterres and the UN high commissioner for refugees Filippo Grandi to the Rohingya Camps in Cox’s Bazar.
He highlighted the negative impacts on the host community caused due to prolonged stay of the Rohingyas in Cox’s Bazar, including the rise of crimes like drug smuggling and human trafficking.
He reiterated that repatriation of the Rohingyas is the only viable solution to the crisis.
Both sides also exchanged their views on the current situation in the Rakhine State and the upcoming high-level conference on the Rohingya crisis.
