Home Affairs Adviser Lt Gen (Retd) Md Jahangir Alam Chowdhury has announced that discussions will take place regarding all types of unequal agreements made with India during the Awami League government’s tenure.

He made these remarks on Wednesday during a press briefing on the upcoming border conference between the chiefs of the Border Guard Bangladesh and India’s Border Security Force in the conference room of the Ministry of Home Affairs at the Secretariat.

Highlighting the alarming issue of Phensedyl production, he said, “They manufacture Phensedyl and smuggle it into Bangladesh. Although they claim to produce it as medicine, it is actually made as a narcotic.”

He emphasised that any activities within 150 yards of the border necessitate mutual approval from both countries. “There is no provision for unilateral action,” he said, adding that such attempts occur frequently, complicating border security and cooperation efforts.

The adviser further mentioned that the construction of any mosque or temple for development purposes requires the consent of both countries. He stressed the importance of ensuring that this consent is obtained moving forward.

Additionally, he said the discussions will focus on halting border killings and preventing shootings of unarmed Bangladeshi citizens by the Border Security Force (BSF) or Indian criminals. The conference will also tackle the serious issue of BSF or Indian nationals abducting or detaining Bangladeshi citizens, highlighting the need for greater cooperation to safeguard citizens on both sides of the border.

“Measures to curb border violations, illegal crossings, or infiltrations by the BSF or Indian nationals will be emphasised. Additionally, preventing the smuggling of illegal drugs like yaba and Phensedyl, weapons, ammunition, and explosives from India into Bangladesh will be a priority,” he added.

Furthermore, the adviser announced that discussions will take place regarding the installation of water treatment plants in four canals that carry wastewater from Agartala to Akhaura. This initiative aims to address environmental concerns and improve water quality in the region.

“Issues such as equitable distribution of water in rivers along the Bangladesh-India border, water extraction from rivers, implementation of water agreements, and reopening the mouth of the Rahimpur canal will be discussed,” he added.
