UN Human Rights Chief Volker Turk is scheduled to arrive in Dhaka on Tuesday, with a particular focus on assessing the human rights situation in Bangladesh following reported violations during the July-August protests.
Seeking firsthand insights into the mass mobilization that led to the departure of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on August 5, Turk will address student leaders from the protests at Dhaka University.
The UN Human Rights Office of the High Commissioner stated that Volker Turk will be visiting Bangladesh from October 29 to 30.
During his stay, he is expected to meet with Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus, various ministerial advisers, the Chief Justice, the Army Chief, and heads of several reform commissions,
as well as representatives from civil society.
Additionally, he will engage with UN agencies and members of diplomatic missions in Bangladesh.
The High Commissioner plans to hold a news conference in Dhaka on Wednesday, marking the conclusion of his mission.
Sources suggest that this brief but important visit could accelerate ongoing investigations into allegations of mass casualties associated with the protests.
The invitation to undertake an independent and impartial investigation was extended to him directly by Chief Adviser Yunus.
This UN investigation is significant for the interim government, as the July-August protests reportedly led to casualties among students, civilians, and law enforcement personnel amid widespread demonstrations against the former Awami League government.
The protests were fueled by public dissatisfaction over issues such as government corruption and limitations on civil liberties.
Reports of a strong response by government forces raised international concerns, leading to increased calls for accountability and reform.
It is also reported that the visit may lead to discussions on establishing a UN Human Rights Commissioner’s office in Bangladesh, which could play a vital role in monitoring and advising on human rights issues.
Since the protests, the UN has actively compiled reports documenting abuses, with a commitment to ensuring accountability and transparency.
