The United Nations has reiterated its strong support for the reform initiatives led by Bangladesh’s interim government under Professor Muhammad Yunus.

UN Under-Secretary-General for Political and Peacebuilding Affairs, Rosemary DiCarlo, reaffirmed this commitment during a meeting on Thursday with Foreign Secretary Md. Jashim Uddin in New York.

The meeting underscored Bangladesh’s dedication to multilateralism and its collaboration with the UN.

Terming the UN’s support “crucial” for realising the aspirations of the July-August revolution, Foreign Secretary Uddin expressed gratitude to DiCarlo.

He also emphasised Bangladesh’s contribution to UN peace efforts and addressed the ongoing Rohingya crisis.

During discussions on UN peace operations, Uddin requested greater representation of Bangladeshi nationals in senior policy-making positions within the UN.

Regarding the Rohingya issue, he stressed the need for global attention and action, citing concerns over the ongoing conflict in Myanmar that continues to force new waves of Rohingya refugees into Bangladesh.

He called for the UN to play a larger role in resolving the crisis and facilitating the repatriation of Rohingyas to Myanmar.

Uddin also recalled Chief Adviser Professor Yunus’s proposal for an international conference on the Rohingya crisis and sought UN support for the initiative.

DiCarlo commended Bangladesh’s cooperation with the UN, particularly in peacekeeping and human rights efforts.

She expressed hope that the UN Special Envoy, Julie Bishop, would continue working with all stakeholders to address the Rohingya issue comprehensively.

Earlier, Uddin delivered a statement to the Third Committee of the UN General Assembly on the “Advancement of Women,” where he highlighted the importance of investing in women’s education and skills development.

He underscored Bangladesh’s efforts to achieve gender parity, promote digital inclusion, and ensure economic empowerment for women.

He also reiterated Bangladesh’s commitment to international frameworks such as the 1995 Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, CEDAW, and the Women, Peace, and Security (WPS) agenda.

Uddin noted Bangladesh’s instrumental role as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council in adopting Resolution 1325 in 2000, which focused on women’s roles in peace and security.

Bangladesh’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Muhammad Abdul Muhith, was also present at the meeting with the Under-Secretary-General.
