United Nations Secretary-General (UNSG) Antonio Guterres has expressed anxiety over intentional spreading of disinformation targeting Bangladesh, Foreign Adviser Md Touhid Hossain said it on Saturday.
“The UN Chief’s visit would more than counterweigh the misinformation and disinformation campaign and the attempts to destabilize Bangladesh,” Touhid said at the joint media briefing with the UN Secretary General at Hotel InterContinental in Dhaka. The UN Secretary General also talked to media during the briefing.
Foreign Affairs Adviser said Guteress appreciated the complexities of the reform process for a free and fair election and a real transformation of Bangladesh.
Guterres has promised the UN’s total commitment to the reform process under the leadership of Chief Adviser Professor Dr Muhammad Yunus, he said.
“The UN Chief will do whatever he can do to support the endeavours of the interim government, and stand by Bangladesh and its people,” Touhid Hossain said.
The adviser said the UN Secretary General’s assurance of support would help Bangladesh in its successful reform process and its transition to democracy in line with the common aspiration of the people of Bangladesh.
To understand the people’s aspirations for the future of Bangladesh, Touhid Hossain said that the secretary general graced three meetings with youth, civil societies, and members of the Reform Commissions.
The adviser said also that the contributions of these groups are paving the way for the July Charter- the blueprint for the country’s democratic transition- and shaping reforms in the political, judicial, electoral, administrative, anti-corruption, and police sectors.
Touhid Hossain said that the UNSG’s Ramadan Solidarity Visit comes with the 50th anniversary of Bangladesh’s membership in the United Nations that marked a historical moment for both Bangladesh and the United Nations.
In addition, he said, the Secretary General himself is witnessing the formative stage of a new Bangladesh following the supreme sacrifices of the July-August mass uprising that aspired for a just, democratic and inclusive society.
Touhid Hossain said, the Secretary General visited Rohingya camps in Cox’s Bazar yesterday and expressed his full solidarity with the forcibly displaced people and vowed to work for their repatriation to Myanmar with dignity, security and human rights.
At the camps, Antonio Guterres met with Rohingya children and youths, witnessed how they get equipped with portable skills and learning opportunities for a dignified return to their mother country.
