United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres concluded his four-day visit to Bangladesh on Sunday, with a focus on supporting the country’s reform initiatives and fostering national unity.

Guterres expressed strong support for Bangladesh’s ongoing reforms, which he believes could help the nation become “one of the most perfect democracies in the world.”

His visit included high-level discussions with the Chief Adviser, Professor Muhammad Yunus, and senior officials, as well as engagements with political leaders, civil society representatives, and young Bangladeshis.

Before departing from Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport at 9:55 am, Guterres spoke over the phone with Professor Yunus, exchanging farewell greetings and reflecting on the significance of his visit.

Environment Adviser Syeda Rizwana Hasan and Chief Adviser’s High Representative for the Rohingya Crisis, Khalilur Rahman, were present to oversee his departure.

During his stay, Guterres engaged in meaningful dialogues focused on strengthening Bangladesh’s democratic framework, tackling global challenges, and fostering national unity.

His visit also included a trip to the Rohingya refugee camps in Cox’s Bazar, where he shared Ramadan solidarity and joined an Iftar meal with approximately one million Rohingyas. Professor Yunus accompanied him, reaffirming Bangladesh’s commitment to supporting the displaced community.

On Saturday, the UN chief praised Bangladesh’s generosity in hosting the Rohingya population, describing it as “absolutely outstanding.”

He recognised the social, economic, and environmental pressures of sheltering over one million refugees, highlighting Bangladesh’s actions as a global example of compassion.

Guterres emphasised the need for global support for Bangladesh, particularly in the fight against misinformation, a challenge highlighted by Professor Yunus.

The Chief Adviser expressed his gratitude for the visit, noting its profound impact, and remarked, “We are halfway through Ramadan, but your visit has made Eid arrive early for us. Your presence has marked the beginning of the celebrations.”
