The United Kingdom (UK) has expressed its support for Bangladesh’s efforts to ensure “free, fair, and inclusive” elections, British High Commissioner Sarah Cooke said on Monday.

Following a meeting with Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) AMM Nasir Uddin and his team in Dhaka, Cooke emphasized the UK’s commitment to the reform process and consensus-building efforts aimed at strengthening democracy in Bangladesh.

“We had a very productive first meeting with the Chief Election Commissioner and his team,” Cooke told reporters, underscoring the UK’s willingness to assist in Bangladesh’s democratic transition.

CEC Nasir Uddin stated that the British envoy and her delegation visited the Election Commission (EC) to discuss its preparations for the next general election and the role of foreign election observers.

“They (UK representatives) want to provide assistance in the democratic transition of Bangladesh,” he said.

The Election Commission informed Cooke about its ongoing voter registration drive and the public notification issued for political parties seeking registration.

Nasir Uddin also mentioned that the commission is gearing up for the procurement of election-related materials, a process that requires significant time and planning.

Regarding election monitoring, the CEC stated that while the foreign observer policy remains unchanged, the domestic observer policy requires revision. The EC plans to invite applications from foreign observers at an appropriate time ahead of the next national election.

Nasir Uddin further revealed that the commission is operating on a set timeline, with the earliest possible election date in December 2025.

“If the elections are held in December, we will have to announce the election schedule in October. We are preparing accordingly to ensure we meet this timeline,” he said.

During the meeting, the British High Commissioner inquired about potential areas of cooperation.
In response, the Election Commission sought assistance in training election agents and observers on electoral conduct rules and laws.

“We told them that if they can help us in this regard, they are welcome,” the CEC added.
The UK’s engagement reflects its broader commitment to supporting democratic institutions and electoral integrity in Bangladesh.
