UGC forms committee to investigate under-construction roof collapse at JKKNIU

At least 11 construction workers were injured when the roof of an under-construction hall collapsed at Jatiya Kabi Kazi Nazrul Islam University (JKKNIU) in Trishal, Mymensingh. Following the incident, both the University Grants Commission (UGC) and the university administration have formed separate investigation committees.

According to a press release issued on Friday (August 1) by the UGC’s Public Relations and Right to Information Division, a four-member committee headed by Mohammad Maksudur Rahman Bhuiyan, Director of UGC’s Planning and Development Division, has been tasked with visiting the site on Sunday (August 3) and submitting a report as soon as possible.

The collapse occurred on Thursday afternoon (July 31) during the construction of a 10-story dormitory under the university’s Physical Infrastructure Development Project. The incident took place at the parking extension connected to the second floor of the dormitory near Bidrohi Hall.

Among the 11 injured workers, eight received primary treatment at Trishal Upazila Health Complex, while three critically injured workers were admitted to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital.

Meanwhile, the university administration has also formed a six-member investigation committee. The committee is headed by Proctor Dr. Md. Mahbubur Rahman, with Deputy Chief Engineer of the Engineering Department Md. Mahbubul Islam serving as Member Secretary. Other members include Dr. Md. Bokhtiar Uddin, Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences; Dr. Md. Ashraful Alam, Director of Student Counseling and Guidance; Assistant Professor Md. Oli Ullah of the Public Administration and Governance Studies Department; and Project Director Syed Mofassirul Islam. The committee has been instructed to submit its findings within five days.
