The University Grants Commission (UGC) of Bangladesh on Monday discussed implementation of a directive of the Prime Minister to bring all the government colleges under 36 public universities to reduce academic and administrative pressure on the National University.
To this aim, the UGC at a tripartite meeting with the vice-chancellors of six public universities and the representatives of BCS General Education Samity at its auditorium here sought their opinions over the implementation of the directive.
The UGC meeting was held after the instruction came from the Ministry of Education on November 5 to take initiative by the commission for implementing the directive of the PM.
Presided over by UGC chairman Professor Dr AK Azad Chowdhury, the meeting was participated, among others, by Dhaka University Vice-Chancellor (VC) Prof Dr AAMS Arefin Siddique, Rajshahi University VC Prof Dr Muhammad Mizanuddin, Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) VC Prof Khaleda Ekram, Chittagong University VC Prof Anowarul Azim, Jahangirnagar University VC Prof Dr Farzana Islam and Jagannath University VC Prof Dr Mizanur Rahman.
On August 31, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina visited the Ministry of Education and asked the ministry to bring the government colleges under public varsities for their smooth functioning.
In the latest development, the ministry on November 5 asked the UGC Chairman to take measures to implement the premier’s directive.
Earlier, on the same issue, UGC held a meeting with the Vice-Chancellors of 36 public universities of the country on December 7, 2014.
