A Dhaka court on Monday placed former International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) prosecutor Barrister Tureen Afroz on a four-day remand in connection with an attempted murder case linked to last year’s student-led anti-discrimination protests in the capital’s Uttara area.
Dhaka Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Zakir Hossain passed the order after police produced Tureen before the court and sought a 10-day remand to interrogate her over her alleged involvement in the incident. Police arrested her late Sunday night from her residence in Uttara’s Sector-11.
The case centers on a violent episode during the mass student uprising that swept parts of Dhaka in July and August 2024. According to the case statement, one Abdul Jabbar sustained a gunshot injury on August 5 while attending an anti-discrimination rally organized in the Uttara West Police Station area. Jabbar was immediately taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for treatment.
Nearly eight months later, on March 27, 2025, Jabbar filed a case naming 50 individuals, including former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, as accused. The case alleges an attempt on Jabbar’s life during the protest, though specific roles of individual suspects are yet to be clarified by investigators.
Authorities have not disclosed the evidence prompting her arrest or clarified her direct connection to the shooting. However, police maintain that further interrogation is necessary to determine her involvement.
No statement has yet been issued by Tureen Afroz or her legal representatives.
The investigation remains ongoing.
