Trust key to true leadership
Staff Reporter :
BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman has called on party leaders and activists-particularly members of the party’s youth wing, Jatiyatabadi Jubo Dal-to earn and uphold public trust as a cornerstone of leadership.
“Earning the people’s trust is essential. If the public accepts you, you are a leader. If not, then you’re not,” he said during a virtual address from London on Monday.
He was speaking at a discussion titled “Anti-Fascist Movement and My Unspoken Words”, organised by Jubo Dal at the Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh (IEB), to mark the anniversary of the July-August Mass Uprising of 2024.
Tarique urged all pro-BNP platforms-including Jubo Dal, Chhatra Dal, Swechchhasebak Dal, Mohila Dal, and the party’s legal forums-to actively engage with the public and promote BNP’s agenda at the grassroots level.
“All our political initiatives are centred on the welfare of the people.
If you uphold the ideals of Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman and recognise Khaleda Zia as your leader, then it is your responsibility to communicate our goals to the people-because, ultimately, their judgment matters most,” he said.
He added that the BNP requires the active support of the public to implement its proposed reforms.
Reflecting on the Jubo Dal’s role in the 2024 anti-government uprising, Tarique praised its members for standing firm in the face of state repression. “During the July-August Mass Uprising alone, 78 Jubo Dal activists laid down their lives,” he noted.
“Such sacrifice was only possible because people stood with you. That trust must never be broken.”
Outlining BNP’s vision for the future, he pledged reforms in employment, healthcare, and environmental sustainability should the party return to power.
Among the commitments, he proposed the offering international language training for school students and unemployed youth to boost prospects for overseas employment, recruiting 80 per cent of primary healthcare workers from among women to strengthen frontline services, Planting 30 to 32 crore trees nationwide over five years to address environmental challenges.
A documentary chronicling the 2024 mass uprising and the popular resistance against the Sheikh Hasina-led government was also screened during the event.
BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, Standing Committee member Mirza Abbas, and other senior party leaders also spoke at the programme, which was chaired by Jubo Dal President Abdul Monayem Munna.
