Tributes paid to Sher-e-Bangla on death anniv

The 63rd death anniversary of Sher-e-Bangla A.K. Fazlul Huq was observed on Saturday with a commemorative discussion organised by Barisal Division Association, Dhaka, at the National Press Club in the city.

Speakers at the event paid tribute to Sher-e-Bangla for his lifelong efforts to enlighten the backward Muslim society through education and enduring contributions to public welfare.
Valiant freedom fighter Md. Ziaul Kabir Dulu, president of the Barisal Division Association, presided over the meeting.

In his opening remarks, he highlighted Sher-e-Bangla’s pivotal role in promoting education among marginalized communities, a legacy he described as “ever memorable.”

Attorney General of Bangladesh and Chairman of the Bangladesh Bar Council, Md. Asaduzzaman, attended as the chief guest.

In his speech, he called Sher-e-Bangla a “wise and visionary politician of the subcontinent,” noting that the Lahore Resolution of 1940, proposed by Sher-e-Bangla, sowed the seeds for the eventual birth of Bangladesh.

He further praised Sher-e-Bangla’s initiatives such as abolishing the zamindari system, passing the Moneylenders’ Act, and setting up Debt Arbitration Boards to protect poor farmers from exploitation.

AKM Shahidur Rahman, Director General of the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB), served as the special guest. He emphasized that Sher-e-Bangla’s ideals should inspire future generations, underscoring that public welfare remains the cornerstone of effective governance.

Other notable speakers included former DUCSU General Secretary Dr. Mostaq Hossain, vice-president and former Additional Secretary Dr. Gyanendra Nath Biswas, executive member and former Additional Secretary Shafiqul Islam, vice-president and former Deputy Managing Director of Sonali Bank Shawkat Islam, Vice-President Sharif Sarwar Asha, Acting General Secretary Advocate Enamul Islam Rubel, and organizational secretary and retired District Judge Md. Abdur Rob Hawlader.
