A Dhaka court has imposed a travel ban on former textiles and jute minister Golam Dastagir Gazi and his wife, Hasina Gazi, and ordered the freezing of assets worth over Tk 24.31 crore in connection with a corruption case under investigation by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).
Dhaka Metropolitan Senior Special Judge Md Zakir Hossain Galib on Tuesday passed the order following three separate petitions filed by ACC Deputy Assistant Director Mohammad Zulfikar.
According to ACC spokesperson Akhtarul Islam, the court ordered the freezing of shares of 12 companies, nine bank accounts, and three vehicles all owned by Gazi or associated entities.
The total estimated value of these assets is Tk 24 crore 31 lakh 71 thousand and 236.
The ACC informed the court that Gazi is attempting to transfer or conceal assets acquired through illicit means, inconsistent with his declared sources of income. To prevent such activities, the commission sought the freezing of his movable and immovable assets and requested a travel restriction to bar both Gazi and his wife from leaving the country.
The court granted the ACC’s plea, emphasizing the need to secure the integrity of the ongoing investigation and prevent any obstruction of justice.
Gazi, a former Awami League lawmaker and minister, now faces growing legal troubles as the ACC intensifies its crackdown on unexplained wealth and abuse of power by public officials.
