A Dhaka court has imposed a travel ban on Gazi Salauddin Tanvir, the former Joint Member Secretary of the National Citizen Party (NCP), amid an ongoing investigation into serious corruption allegations. The court has also ordered the blocking of his National Identity Card (NID). The order was issued on Tuesday by Dhaka Metropolitan Senior Special Judge Zakir Hossain Galib, following a petition filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).
In the petition, ACC Assistant Director S. M. Rashedul Hasan stated that Tanvir is under investigation for amassing hundreds of crores of taka in illicit wealth through abuse of power, lobbying, extortion, and manipulation of tenders. The ACC expressed concern that Tanvir may flee the country to avoid prosecution, based on credible intelligence gathered during the inquiry.
The petition emphasized that blocking his NID and restricting international travel are essential to ensure an uninterrupted and effective investigation.
It is worth noting that on April 21, the National Citizen Party temporarily suspended Tanvir and issued a show-cause notice seeking an explanation for his alleged misconduct.
