BNP Standing Committee Member Ameer Khashru Mahmud Chowdhury has said that attaining the country’s sustainable development will remain elusive if the government fails to build a transparent, data-driven and skilled public administration.
Claiming that information currently holds immense significance in driving the nation’s overall development, the BNP leader said that in the modern world, greater access to information equates to greater power.
There is still adequate ambiguity in adopting and implementing information-based policies in the country, he said, adding that political will and professionalism are required to achieve the goal.
The BNP leader was addressing a seminar on ‘Information-Driven Inclusive Bangladesh: Vision 2035’ organized by the Centre for Policy Analysis and Reform, at Mozaffar Ahmed Chowdhury Auditorium of Dhaka University on Tuesday.
At present, the information is being used to gain petty political interest and the ousted fascist Awami League has indulged in such dishonest practice during its rule, he said.
The previous fascist government tried to increase per capita income by deliberately underestimating the population dada, he said, adding, “It is not only misleading, but also a great betrayal of the future of the nation.”
Now question has been raised about the credibility of the data provided by the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS), which is a matter of concern for the policy-making process of a country, he said.
Claiming that transparency, professionalism and skilled manpower are imperative in the data collection process, especially in the capital market, banking and the country’s other financial sectors, said the BNP leader.
